Sol Cat @ The Northstar Bar - 7.10.15

Catching live music is easy. Finding a truly unique and well-rounded show is the difficult part. Friday’s Sol Cat debut at Philadelphia’s Northstar Bar was one of those show rarities. Sol Cat has been on the road for the better part of a decade. This hard touring band is comprised of a group of musicians all honed and polished in the limelight of Nashville Tennessee’s fantastic music scene. As of late that scene has been producing a jaw-dropping mix of garage rock that has the music scene taking cues and notice. From Jeff the Brotherhood to

Live at the Blockley - Three Years of shows In Philly

With The Blockley closing soon at the end of this month it felt like I should uncork the past years in memories. I met Chris Perella in March of 2011 after he contacted me when he saw a video I made of Akron/Family playing at the Blockley. I went into the club a few days later and we chatted about me shooting video at more shows. Now it's the end of 2013 and I sit a bit shocked and saddened by the news of the Blockley closing its doors for the foreseeable future. Chris and Jesse opened the Blockley up and just let many of us do what we wanted to creatively.

The Voice Project

Unless you’ve been avoiding the media altogether you’re probably familiar with the problems in Central Africa with children being taken from their families and forced to fight for Joseph Kony’s LRA . The LRA is making these children do awful things including killing their friends and family members.  Some of these children escape and hide, afraid to return home because of retaliations for the atrocities they were forced to commit.

In 2003 American Jason Russell created a group called Invisible Children, and released the now famous “Kony 2012” video, describing the atrocities committed by the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony.   There is another video now being spread by The Voice Project

The women of northern Uganda have been banding together in groups to support each other and they are singing songs. The lyrics of “dwog paco” (come home) songs to let their abducted children and former soldiers know that they are forgiven and that they should come back. The songs are spread by radio and word of mouth and it’s just starting to see positive results.  There is NO other way for these mothers to get messages to these kids in the jungle.  Their children are returning and for the first time in many years the area has a chance at peace.

The Voice Project is an attempt to support these incredible women and to amplify the peace movement in central Africa, and an effort to see how far a voice can carry.

The Voice Project raises money to build the radio towers throughout and around the jungle.  Please watch this video (actually made by Invisible Children co-founder Bobby Bailey, who shot a lot of Kony 2012).  It encourages people to buy a scarf with the money going to build the towers.  For more information on The Voice Project please visit  http://voiceproject.org/
