Sol Cat @ The Northstar Bar - 7.10.15

Catching live music is easy. Finding a truly unique and well-rounded show is the difficult part. Friday’s Sol Cat debut at Philadelphia’s Northstar Bar was one of those show rarities. Sol Cat has been on the road for the better part of a decade. This hard touring band is comprised of a group of musicians all honed and polished in the limelight of Nashville Tennessee’s fantastic music scene. As of late that scene has been producing a jaw-dropping mix of garage rock that has the music scene taking cues and notice. From Jeff the Brotherhood to

Live at the Blockley - Three Years of shows In Philly

With The Blockley closing soon at the end of this month it felt like I should uncork the past years in memories. I met Chris Perella in March of 2011 after he contacted me when he saw a video I made of Akron/Family playing at the Blockley. I went into the club a few days later and we chatted about me shooting video at more shows. Now it's the end of 2013 and I sit a bit shocked and saddened by the news of the Blockley closing its doors for the foreseeable future. Chris and Jesse opened the Blockley up and just let many of us do what we wanted to creatively.

onuinuLook what’s starting to happen with Dorian Duvall’s one man electro-pop band Onuinu. He’s been crafting music in Portland, OR for the past few years and found his way to Philadelphia on a cold and snowy January evening. It would be interesting to see him with his whole band who unfortunately couldn’t make this tour. Peep Onuinu in the video below

The London Souls at Milkboy Philadelphia

londonsoulsThe London Souls squeezed into the back of Milkboy Philadelphia on Friday the 11th of January. The trio rattled off a dozen or so songs to the delight of a packed room. Watching Tash Neal chop up new material off of Here Come The Girls, was fairly miraculous. Neal was seriously injured earlier this year in a car accident. He was near death and needed brain surgery to save his life. In the video below, watch the fully recovered Tash Neal open the Philly show with a guitar-heavy version of “She’s So Mad”.

Cheers Elephant Live at the Blockley

Posted on by jake Posted in The Beat | Leave a comment

The Philadelphia band Cheers Elephant has been recommended to me several times over the past six months. I can see why – with great stage presence, fatty guitar riffs and some cool three part harmonies these guys are a band on the rise. Look for big things from these cats in 2013. Here is them doing a frisky little version of “Shark Attack” from the Blockley this past week.

Arrested Development Playing Tennessee Live at the Blockley

Posted on by jake Posted in The Beat | Leave a comment

The year was 1992 and I was deep in High School. One of my favorite albums was Arrested Development’s album 3 Years, 5 Months And 2 Days in the life of…

Their music was so easy to digest and enjoy – it was upbeat and gave us something to really start parties off on the right foot. Now 20 years latter Arrested Development is out touring in celebration of this monumentous 90’s album. Peep them doing “Tennnessee” at the Blockley – this version includes Speech offering the true background of the song which was quite misunderstood by the masses.

Vacationer Live at Underground Arts 9.28.12

Posted on by jake Posted in The Beat | Leave a comment

Philadelphia’s Vacationer owns the summer with their lofty feel-good vocals and laid-back vibe and beats. They played their second Philadelphia show at the cities newest or at least redone music venue Underground Arts. The show caught fire around the time they performed “Trip” and what I believe to be a remixed version of “Jesus” by DOM that really made the 200 or so move. It should also be noted that this venue is spectacular! Set in a warehouse style basement, it’s got character galore, great sound, solid lights, low stage, choice beer and one heck of a recording studio in the back. Peep Vacationer doing “Good As New” and “Trip” live and get a feel for the new Underground Arts venue.

alt-J-Philadelphia

alt-J – the four man Indie group from the UK is fast blowing up in the states. With a song on the last season of Weeds and a new album entitled An Awesome Wave just released, alt-J landed at Johnny Brenda’s for a sold out show. This band is even Favorited to win the 2012 Murcury Prize. I suspect that will be the last time seeing them in a small club. Peep them as their front man Joe Newman craftily winds us through some of the most interesting and easiest vocals to the ears on their song “Tessellate”
